Traversing Lavaux

The town of Vevey is the perfect departure point for an excursion in Lavaux. At the Swiss Federal Railways station, simply jump on the next train to Saint-Saphorin, and you’ll be in one of the prettiest villages in Switzerland in under ten minutes.

Take the underpass, then follow Ruelle Romaine, Chemin du Mont and finally Chemin de Blassinges to get to Chexbres. It’s about a two-kilometer walk uphill among old rocks, alongside the lake and past the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

People in this part of the world have nothing against taking their aperitif any time from 11 a.m. onwards. That’s lucky, because there are at least three winemakers within 50 meters of Chexbres station who offer tastings. Nevertheless, don’t forget to check opening hours and book in advance!

The most dedicated of you can continue on foot toward Cully on five kilometers of pathways that crisscross Lavaux. Bus 382 is an excellent alternative, however, whisking you to Cully in just over 15 minutes.

Although it’s famed for its jazz festival and vineyards, the charming little town of Cully also boasts excellent food and drink. Whether you’re after a traditional inn, something Italian or fillets of perch straight from Lake Geneva, you won’t be disappointed.

Stroll along the quays towards Moratel beach, nestled in a pretty little cove complete with a lawn and pebbled strip and offering fabulous views of the nearby mountains. It’s the perfect place to digest in the sun and take a dip in the largest lake in Western Europe.

Leaving Cully’s beach behind you, follow the lake shore for roughly 400 meters and head through the underpass to reach Epesses station. The train – there are two an hour – will take you back to Vevey in 15 minutes along one of the most spectacular lines the region has to offer.
