My day in Montreux

We are off on a day trip to Montreux, a charming little town on the lake that has become world famous for its jazz festival. Arriving by train, we go down the couple of steps that separate us from the platform and we already know why this place is called “the pearl of Lake Geneva”. There are flowers everywhere, an incredible view over the nearby mountains and numerous buildings in Belle Epoque style that give you the feeling you have stepped back in time. Let’s go and find out what lies behind the fantastic first impression!

The Old Town of Montreux, its cobbled streets and winemakers’ houses from the 18th century. Located about 15 minutes on foot from the lake shore, on the slopes, it is the perfect place for a lazy stroll.

A real icon of the region,the Chateau de Chillonhas had pride of place on its little rocky island since the 12th century. It is the most visited historic monument in Switzerland.

Steps

1. Freddie Mercury

Kicking off the day in rock mode beside the statue of Freddie Mercury (1946-1991). The band Queen recorded 6 albums in Montreux!

2. CGN

Destination Chillon, on board a splendid Belle Epoque boat. Seeing the paddle wheels and all the machinery in action is really impressive. Course straight ahead!

3. Visit to Chillon

Visiting the famous Chateau de Chillon. You’d think you were in Game of Thrones, but without the dragons! Passing through the ancient dungeons that inspired the poet Lord Byron gives you the shivers, nevertheless...

4. Towards Territet

The plan: a twenty-minute walk to reach Territet. You just have to follow the little pedestrian path that runs along the lakeside. It doesn’t get much better than this.

5. Stop on a bench

A perfectly placed sculpture for a contemplative break. To make it even better, there is a little refreshment bar, where you can regain your strength under a parasol.

6. Funicular railway

One of the steepest funicular railways in the world is hiding just behind the “Territet Gare” (Territel Station) bus stop. Incredible view The 8-minute journey to Glion is over far too quickly...

7. The Glion Station buffet restaurant

An excellent place, very attentive service... And what can I say about the view?! We could have happily spent the whole afternoon there, but time is flying and there are still things to see.

8. Going down on foot

Follow the Sentier de Baumes, then the Sentier du Mont-Fleuri, cross the Route de Glion and go back up a little to take the Vieux-Chemin-Montreux-Glion as far as the Rue du Temple. A great walk after a big meal!

9. Temple St-Vincent

A splendid 16th century building named after the patron saint of winemakers. Not surprising for a part of the country that produces so many excellent vintages!

10. Montreux old town

Exploring the Planches neighbourhood, with its cobbled streets and picturesque buildings. A complete change of scene and a cool oasis, just a 15 minute walk from the flowered lakeside.

11. Back to the lakeside

Back to the lakeside after a very full day. Time to have a drink on the terrace and admire the sunset. And a chance to start sorting out the photos.
