In 1946 Marcel Duchamp spent five weeks in Switzerland at Lake Geneva, in the company of one of the women he loved, Mary Reynolds. He lived in the Bellevue Hotel (now Hotel Le Baron Tavernier) in Bellevue near Chexbres, in the heart of Lavaux, located just steps from the named waterfall forestay. He must have heard every night how the waterfall dominates, its rumbling, the idyllic tranquility of the place, and causes, in its endless fall, a strange noise surf.
