Every year, each second Tuesday in November, Vevey celebrates Saint-Martin. This local tradition dating back to the Middle Ages was initiated by the Dukes of Savoy, with the fair allowing all residents in the Leman area to become a trader for the day without being subject to tax on their earnings.
As a festival aimed at promoting sharing and solidarity, but also the opportunity to find some bargains and for the labourers working the land, the plains, the mountains and the vineyards to meet up, for the locals, good Saint-Martin marks the beginning of an abundant winter and a festival for celebrating high spirits. Nowadays, the Saint-Martin Fair has become a traditional autumn event in Vevey. Traders and customers alike attend in ever greater numbers amidst a warm and convivial atmosphere. As well as the traditional nonnette spiced buns, there are many culinary delights on offer, including spit-roast beef.
