In the 1930s, Catholics in the region gathered in a room at the Clinique Mont Repos, now occupied by the Hotel Le Mirador. As the space became too cramped, the sisters at the clinic undertook to raise the necessary funds for the construction of a chapel. Construction began in 1934 with the active participation of volunteers from the community.
St. Joseph’s Chapel was consecrated on June 23, 1935, by Bishop Besson of Fribourg. Since then, it has hosted services for the Catholic community of Chardonne, Jongny, and Mont-Pèlerin, which is now part of the St. John of Vevey parish.
Over the decades, the chapel has been renovated and enhanced with several additions, including three bells installed in 1972, a new choir loft featuring a batik depicting the Ascension of Christ, and an organ installed in 1999. Renovation and accessibility improvements were also carried out in 2012–2013.
