Ernest Miller Hemingway

Hemmingway came to Switzerland for the first time in January 1922 and stayed at the “Pension de la Forêt” in Chamby. In his room in this Swiss chalet, he wrote several chapters of “Farewell to Arms”, in which he recounts his toboggan outings at Les Avants and his walks in the snow at the “Bains de l’Alliaz”.

A war correspondent during the First World War and observer of the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway was a keen traveller. The letters he wrote to his family and friends are well worth reading. Funny, full of advice and gossip, reflections and recipes, they are packed with all sorts of details about the places where the writer stayed.

After the war, he moved to Paris and published “ The Torrents of Spring ”, “ The Sun also rises, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro ” and “ The Old Man and the Sea ”. In 1954, he received the Nobel Prize for literature.
