St-Saphorin
St-Saphorin wines are rich and powerful, while retaining a great finesse, reinforced with subtle fruity aromas.
The land of Rivaz, which by the way is the smallest commune in the Canton of Vaud, is devoted 70% to winegrowing, which makes it a really authentic wine village. Its name, derived from “ripa” meaning “shore” in latin, indicates that the village was located at the water’s edge, before being moved to higher ground. Indeed, in the year 563, Mount Tauredunum, situated near the famous Aiguilles du Midi mountains, collapsed. This caused a tidal wave on Lake Geneva, which engulfed the lakeside township. The survivors then decided to rebuild their village in a more protected area higher up the hill.
The history of St-Saphorin, known for its narrow streets and original church tower, goes back to Roman times. Traces from this period – an altar and a mile stone dating from the year 53 – are still visible inside the church.
